Abstract : Recently developed techniques have been employed to redesign and build a modulated electron beam device and cryosorp pump. The cryosorp pump is necessitated by the ambient atmosphere encountered during re-entry. Unless protected by a cryosorp pump, electrical breakdown between electrodes makes the electron gun inoperable. The design of the electron gun involved the use of digital computer synthesis and analysis programs. In addition the electrode shapes were determined by means of an electrolytic tank. The resulting design, is a Pierce type gun with an additional focussing electrode at intermediate potential. The electron gun characteristics are a microperveance of 1.7 and an area convergence ratio of 75. The microwave cavity is tuneable within a narrow band as well as having an adjustable loop to permit maximum coupling to the coax input. A pair of cavities has been provided so that one may be used to test the modulation on the beam. The cryosorp pump utilizes a novel technique for bonding the zeolite adsorbent to a copper substrate. A part of the equipment prepared for testing is an electron beam analyzer which permits the determination of the beam profile as a function of position along the beam. The apparatus is water-cooled to permit continuous operation under test without overheating components. (Author)
