Abstract : Examination of the effects of 10 solar flares on near-vertical-incidence vlf soundings shows change with flare, probing vlf radio frequency, polarization of downcoming wave, and direction of propagation relative to geomagnetic field. A single consistent feature was noted, namely that an increase in relative propagation time never occurred during the onset of a flare. The variation from flare to flare is evidently predominately the result of variation in the x-ray spectra. (Author)
