Abstract : The present method of sealing the voids between the insulated conductors of shipboard electrical cables, to ensure longitudinal watertightness, makes the process of preparation of the cable ends for installation tedious and inordinately time consuming. A program to eliminate this problem, by developing cables incorporating more easily strippable valley sealants, was established and is being continued. This program has concentrated on evaluating two materials to determine the feasibility of their use as cable sealants. Samples containing them were procured from three major navy cable manufacturers. Control, power, and communication cable types are represented. In general, results indicate that use of these materials as sealants is feasible but that further work should be conducted to correct reported deficiencies. (Author)
