Abstract : Very pure magnesium oxide fibers reinforced fluoroelastomer composite seal materials having excellent high temperature resistance and compression set resistance after long time periods at temperatures up to 500 F HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED. Outstanding compression set resistance was achieved by curing composites with peroxides. After post-curing by a vacuum oven-air oven process, the new seal material consists only of magnesium oxide fibers dispersed in a fluoroelastomer matrix which has very stable carbon-carbon crosslinks. Preliminary research also indicated that fluoroelastomer seal materials featuring a blend of magnesium oxide and carbon fiber reinforcement have very good heat aging resistance and low compression set. The best fiber reinforced compound had a compression set of 17% after 192 hours at 400 F and 43% after 72 hours at 500 F. (Author, modified-PL)
