Abstract : A set of experiments employing a mass spectrometer to study the kinetics and thermodynamics of graphite vaporization are described. Results obtained by the Knudsen effusion method are compared with results of free vaporization from polycrystalline graphite surfaces. Reflection of carbon vapor beams from graphite surfaces has been studied as a function of surface temperature for the three principle carbon vapor species, C1, C2 C3. These results are explained and correlated with those of the vaporization studies. Flash vaporization of thin, vapor deposited carbon films is employed to examine the nature of these deposited films. The composition of the flashed vapor is seen to vary according to the nature of the solid substrate. (Author)
