Abstract : The measurement of target position in reconnaissance imagery in both ground and realtime airborne environments, is a vital military function. Under a previous study (RADC Contract F30602-69-C-0178), it was demonstrated that the measurement of eye pointing direction by the Honeywell Oculometer can be used to rapidly and easily determine target position in real time as the operator looks normally at a real time display. The Oculometer technique provides instant target position readout without any manual control (e.g., joystick) action by the operator. There is no attachment to or interference with the operator. This contract results in (1) fabrication of an Oculometer (in the form of a viewing hood) suitable for practical airborne target position measurement on the B-scan real time display, and (2) evaluation of the device inflight with real time IR imagery displayed on the associated B-scan. The flight tests resulted in reliable Oculometer operation, with target designation accuracies of approximately 0.3 degree in terms of visual angle, or 0.1 inch on the screen. In summary, this program has demonstrated the practicality of use of the Oculometer technique in the airborne environment for reconnaissance and other applications of eye control. (Author)
