Abstract : Because of the problems in removing oil spills from bodies of water, an investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of using cell-free bacterial extracts for the emulsification and oxidation of petroleum hydrocarbons. Data are presented which indicate that cell-free extracts exhibit a more avid attack on oil, as determined by oxygen uptake studies and total organic carbon analyses, than intact microbial cells. The theory supporting these results is presented and the potential application of the process is discussed. (Author)
