Abstract : In a description of organization and research objectives of the Ocean Acre program, C. L. Brown, Jr. has defined the study area as a 100 x 100 kilometer square located just south of Bermuda. This parcel of open ocean water lies between latitude 31 degrees 30 minutes N and latitude 32 degrees 30 minutes N, with its meridional boundaries at longitude 63 degrees 30 minutes W and longitude 64 degrees 30 minutes W. The primary objective of the Ocean Acre program is to determine concurrently the acoustic and biological characteristics of the DSL (Deep-Scattering Layer) at various geographical locations at different seasons. The objective of this report is to compare the Ocean Acre sampling site with surrounding areas in order to determine whether the study area is representative of the much larger geographical province referred to as the Sargasso Sea. As a basis for this comparison, pertinent literature is reviewed; and selected physical, chemical, and biological characteristics are described and examined. (Author)
