Abstract : The purpose of these analytical and experimental efforts has been to achieve automatic identification and recognition of the two-dimensional images of three-dimensional aerospace vehicles using the slope-density recognition technique Parallel pattern-abstraction methods have been developed as the initial step in a longer range but promising alternate approach. During this current program, the detailed paper design of a laboratory-feasibility pattern-rocognition machine based on the multi-prototype slope-density pattern-rocognition principle has been accomplished; a two-step procedure for the generation of optimized prototypes suitable for use by the laboratory-feasibility demonstration machine has been designed; the concept for a spatial image analyzer capable of performing parallel-pattern abstraction has been formulated; and various key items of hardware necessary to the realization of practical systems have been investigated.
