Abstract : Although polarization techniques can be used to improve underwater visibility, commercially available absorption polarizers are only 21 to 37 percent efficient in converting unpolarized light to circularly polarized light. A free-flooded experimental polarizer that is approximately 57 percent efficient has been designed and tested. By changing to a non-flooded design, it should be possible to build future polarizers which are approximately 90 percent efficient. (Author)
