Abstract : A limited airworthiness evaluation was conducted on the UH-1C helicopter armed with the XM156/Hornet missile system. The test was conducted to verify a safe flight envelope, which would be the basis for a safety-of-flight release for the US Army Missile Command to conduct a feasibility study of the Hornet missile using an XM156 mount. Static longitudinal stability and static lateral-directional stability were evaluated at 50 and 80 knots indicated airspeed (KIAS). Inflight jettisons of a dummy missile and launcher were conducted, verifying an evelope of 20 degrees of sideslip up to 60 KIAS, decreasing to 10 degrees of sideslip at 80 KIAS. The missile was fired in flight at a hover and at 80 KIAS. The missile firings had no apparent adverse effects on the helicopter or crew. (Author)
