Abstract : This report presents the results of the fifth quarter effort of a 22-month investigation into the measurement procedures and techniques for electromagnetic susceptibility testing of digital receiving equipment. The period covered is from 30 August 1971 to 28 November 1971. Major efforts of this quarter have been the development of the simulation susceptibility test plan, susceptibility testing of the 40DPSK receiver-demodulator, and critical appraisal of the test procedures and instrumentation. The demodulator phase-locked loop is the most susceptible function and is the primary cause of data errors occuring at 5 to 10 degrees zero-crossing jitter rather than the expected 20 to 30 degrees. Gaussian noise is the most effective interference with CW and 40DPSK interference following. The critical appraisal of measurement techniques resulted in a method to reduce the residual jitter and a concept to measure the degree of susceptibility by the tolerable predistortion of the transmitted signal before the received and demodulated data becomes worthless. Documentation of the simulation of interference modulators and susceptibility monitoring circuits concludes the report. (Author)
