Abstract : An experimental program was performed to evaluate infrared to visible parametric frequency image upconversion. The experiments were performed using a 10.6-micrometer laset to illuminate a scatterplate. A ruby laser local oscillator and proustite nonlinear optical mixer were used to upconvert 10.6-micrometer radiation to 0.6516 micrometer. The upconversion theory and phase matching requirements were used to predict efficiency, field of view, optical bandwidth, wavelength tunability, local oscillator beam divergence effects, image conversion, and other process characteristics. In addition, damage thresholds and performance of the proustite mixer were determined. A study of passive scene detection versus laser-illuminated scene detection using upconversion was performed. An experiment to compare the upconversion laboratory system to a cryogenically cooled HgCdTe long wave infrared detector was performed.
