Abstract : The report documents the second part of a two-year study of the flight behavior of volute stabilized cylindrical forebodies. The volute, basically a tapered, coiled, helical spring, was studied during the first year's work to establish a base for the more complex analysis presented here. The free flight equations of motion have been derived and numerically solved for a number of model geometries. The equations of motion can be used for rigid bodies but are especially amenable for treatment of the elastic volute case. It was concluded that the dynamic equation for the elastic tail could be reduced to a static constraint equation involving the aerodynamic and stiffness properties of the volute. The proposed eight-degree-of-freedom case was then reduced to six-degree-of-freedom case. The equations of motion were solved for both constrained cg and free flight conditions and compared.
