Abstract : Use of a coherent light source in a microstereoscope offers potential advantages over incoherent illumination in viewing film imagery. Rotation of the dc term in the aperture stops of the microstereoscope not only reduces optical noise, but also results in a system modulation transfer function (MTF) greater than that obtainable with conventional illumination. To test this technique, a Richards light table was modified to accommodate a coherent (laser) light source with beam rotation. The microstereoscope used was a Wild M-5. Preliminary results show that the coherent resolution is greater than with the conventional incoherent illumination and that the coherent optical noise is eliminated. (Author)
