Abstract : A trapeze device for stationary swimming at regulated rates was developed in order to investigate the physiology of underwater swimming and to use this type of work for experimental purposes in situations which preclude unrestricted swimming. Oxygen consumption was measured in 18 subjects swimming against a range of opposing forces on this apparatus. By comparison with values obtained for the same subjects during free swimming, it was possible to relate trapeze swim-ergometer loads to actual swimming speeds. Oxygen consumption values at a given load were found, in most cases, to be less variable than those observed in free swimming at the equivalent speed. Stationary swimming with this apparatus is considered a satisfactory substitute for free swimming for many experimental purposes. (Author)
