Abstract : Chemical systems were investigated in a flash photolysis laser apparatus in order to discover new output wavelengths and new molecules which produce lasing. CW (continuous wave) lasing on the 3.39 micrometers transition of atomic neon was obtained with an inexpensive RF (radio frequency) radio amateur transmitter for alignment purposes. The flash photolysis system was tested by obtaining lasing on the 2P(1/2)-2P(3/2) magnetic dipole transition of atomic iodine at 1.3 micrometers by flash photolysis of trifluoromethyl iodide, CF3I. One hundred and eight watt 10 microseconds pulsed laser oscillation was obtained on this iodine transition for the first time by flash photolysis of 17 torr 2-2-2 trifluoroethyl iodide CF3CH2I. Ozone-hydrogen, cyanogen halide, iodine monochlor ide, sulfur trioxide, and ethylene systems, in which vibrational excitation had been observed previously by spectroscopic means, also were investigated.
