Abstract : The development of the executive for the Aerospace Multiprocessor uses a building block technique which is a natural and necessary extension of the modular hardware architecture. Such architecture provides a method for accomodating changing computing activities as well as new configurations of hardware modules. The result is a set of tailored hardware and software modules that may be appropriately interconnected to form a variety of systems. The system software is divided into functional modules that can be linked into a system after each module has been indivudually validated. All interpreters (processors) of the system are independent of each other and may select any executive module or any application task for execution. A description of the executive modules is included, defining the following functions: scheduling tasks, resource allocation, error recovery, error detection, reconfiguration, and file handling. These may be selected as needed (using a set of selection parameters), from a library of functions, at mission definition time. System tasks such as the system loader and the communication task are needed to initiate the system and to allow for system communication with the external environment. The modular multiprocessor system can change its characteristics to serve a wide range of applications. (Author)
