Abstract : A research outline is presented for the development of constitutive equations that would characterize the response of the various materials comprising an airfield system. The constitutive equations will be compatible within a broad analytical approach based upon finite element computer techniques. These equations would be functionally optimized, yet they will maintain the capability of faithfully simulating actual material behavior. Different approaches to constitutive equation development are discussed. Available techniques are briefly analyzed and compared, and some peripheral difficulties associated with achieving satisfactory airfield pavement response simulation are pointed out. A brief commentary on the state of the art is presented. Developments in constitutive equations considered most appropriate for characterizing the various pavement materials are recommended.
