Abstract : This study addresses the man-machine interface relationship of weapon guidance within the combat environment. In ground troop support action, the employment of direct fire weapons implies direct vision target acquisition either with or without magnification aiding. Assuming that the weapon system permits longrange delivery, the only serious limitation is capability of the operator to acquire the target at suitable ranges and accurately deliver the weapon to that target. This weapon delivery probelm can be resolved by providing the operator with a long range direct vision optical system which would permit him to acquire a target, lock a weapon tracking system on it, fire and immediately leave the area. The Optical Contrast Seeker (OCS) offers this launch and leave capability. With a launch-and-forget weapon the helicopter could remain masked until the Aircraft Commander has selected an optimum time and place to initiate a attack; an attack which would require but a brief exposure to potential retaliatory fire before returning to a masked position.
