Abstract : Transient phenomena such as electromagnetic pulse (EMP), lightning or system generated electromagnetic interference (EMI), can induce large transient currents on electrical cables. For protection against these currents, sophisticated systems require the use of extensive cable shielding. The goals of this program were to design, develop, and demonstrate advanced techniques and hardware for evaluating the shielding effectiveness of cable harnesses typically encountered in avionic systems. The resultant Transient Cable Test Facility (TCTF) is oriented toward either production line or laboratory work. It offers wide bandwidth (100 MKz), high dynamic range (to 120 dB), nondestructive testing of any specified cable harness. Its speed and simplicity of operation are especially attractive for production line usage. (Author)
