Abstract : A heuristic approach to the analysis of multichannel experimental data such as that obtained from vibrating structures is presented. The spatial covariance matrix, the Fourier transformation, and notions from factor analysis are used to obtain approximate mode shapes and natural frequencies for structures responding to random loadings. This approach is demonstrated using experimental data obtained from the response of a long cantilevered cylindrical shell subjected to random loading. (Author)
