Abstract : This report documents results obtained in the experimental investigation of the ability of twisted pair cable to carry high speed digital signals. Current DCA plans point to increased emphasis on communication of high speed data. To date, most methods of data transmission have made use of Frequency Division Multiplexed (FDM) derived channels via modems. An alternate method of data communications which can be employed utilizes time-division multiplexed digital signals. A logical choice of media for on-base and short distance communication is the existing twisted pair cable plant presently used for analog traffic. It was the intent of this project to measure pertinent cable characteristics and digital distortion to gauge the ability of twisted pair cable to handle high speed data such that as all-digital networks evolve, effective use can be made of the existing cable plant.
