Abstract : Techniques pertinent to base defense for electromagnetic sensing of intruders have been considered in phenomenological categories: electrostatic, magnetostatic, radar, transmission lines, microwave beam breakers, and others. Some generalizations are presented on the operational characteristics of each category, such as possible shapes of the zone of detection and required mode of sensor deployment (e.g., suspended cable, buried cable, radiation), as well as on the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each technology, such as imperviousness to weather. A number of devices are recommended for further development. (Author)
