Abstract : A fast, electrostatically focused photomultiplier tube has been developed for optical communications applications. The new photomultiplier is designated the RCA C31050 and has a GaAsP (Cs) photocathode for use at 532 nm. Three GaP(Cs) dynodes provide gains exceeding 10,000. A coaxial anode output structure is employed which operated without bias. Pulse testing of the C31050 (at the ADP/405B Space Data Relay/Laser Communications group facilities) indicated a 10-19% rise time of 325 ps, a 90-10% fall time of 325 ps, and a FWHM of 480 ps. The FWTM was 840 ps. Details of design are given in the text. (Author)
