Title : Summary of Aircraft Accidents within 5 Miles of USN/USMC Airfields, FY 1964 - 1968.
Corporate Author : NAVAL SAFETY CENTER NORFOLK VA
Report Date : 1968

Abstract : This summary is a compilation of data extracted from records of U.S. Navy aircraft accidents that occurred within a five mile radius of an airport. Records were reviewed but only those aircraft taking off or landing at the airport were considered; random crashes of enroute traffic are not included. This summary includes the distance and direction from the airfield that accidents occurred, the type of aircraft involved, injuries to civilians, and damage to private property where such information was available. This summary is patterned after a similar study conducted by the U.S. Air Force covering Fiscal Year 1960 through Fiscal Year 1964 (Study NR 21-65, Directorate of Aerospace Safety, Norton Air Force Base, California); the conclusions of both are very similar. It is recommended that these summaries be used as a basis for discouraging local civil authorities from approving zoning requests for housing or commercial use in areas along the extended centerline of runways for at least three miles.
