Abstract : The objective of this program was to design, develop, fabricate and deliver two digital modulator/drivers. One modulator/driver was to operate at 0.53 micrometer wavelength and the other at 1.06 micrometers wavelength. The program included a modulator design phase, a fabrication phase, and an electrooptic evaluation phase. The design approach utilized the excellent electro-optic properties of lithium tantalate, a modulator material, and combined solid state modulator drivers and associated electronics into a compact package. Each modulator unit consisted of a modulator subassembly, modulator driver, temperature controller, automatic electronic compensator, and manual compensator. Separate power supplies were also fabricated for each unit. The performance of both modulator units was evaluated under typcial operating conditions. A 500 Mbps Nd-YAG laser provided the optical input for modulator tests, and frequency doubling was used to provide the 0.53 micrometer signal.
