Abstract : The work being reported on in this phase of a continuing study is based upon previous work which investigated the potential in naval operational applications of several possible holographic imaging systems, especially when coupled with digital computers (CCCC Reports Nos. 132-2 and 132-3, AD-869245L and AD-884157L). This report covers the possible use of naval fire control radars in conjunction with holographic imaging as an aid in aircraft and missile identification. Two approaches were investigated, one involving the use of a number of ships to form, in effect, a giant holographic receiving array with a single ship providing illuminating radiation, and the other involving a target-synthesized aperture approach, wherein a single ship would generate a hologram from information received as a target moved across an illuminating beam. The computational requirements for digital formation of the hologram were investigated, as well as the requirements for additional equipment beyond that normally available aboard ship. The study included an assessment of position sensing systems available or under development which would be capable of the high navigational accuracy required by the giant array approach, together with their computational requirements.
