Abstract : SAMSON, a two-dimensional finite element code, was developed for dynamic stress analysis of nonlinear media-structure problems. It is based on small strain theory and is applicable to axisymmetric and plane bodies with arbitrary material properties. This code is a modification of the existing SLAM code. Major modifications included incorporation of a new solution procedure and the addition of nonlinear structure and soil media constitutive laws. The solution procedure is especially suited for solution of large nonlinear problems in or out of core. In addition, new finite elements were added to the element library and the code was given the capability to treat sliding/debonding interfaces. In this volume SAMSON is described at a level of detail above that required for nominal usage. Information is presented which will enable the sophisticated programmer to construct his own loading routines and material laws.
