Abstract : Various sight system and fire control simulations were implemented in the existing digital simulation of air-to-air combat known originally as 'Improved Model for Aerial Gunnery Effectiveness' (IMAGE) and later as 'Parameter Optimizing Aerial Gunnery Model' (POAGM). The simulations were effected consistent with the constraints that the digital program remain flexible, workable, and convenient to use on the Eglin Air Force Base CDC 6600 computer. The project objectives were met with the implementation of a director sight system, a second order sight system for the pilot, and an impact plane tracking system. Additional flexibility was added to the simulation by the incorporation of a variety of projectiles usable in the fire control and terminal effects section of the program. Usability of the digital program was enhanced by designing and implementing a new overlay structure for the fire control section. Execution times were also improved by replacement of the previous ballistic table look-up scheme by a rapidly computing time of flight polynomial. (Author)
