Abstract : Techniques resulting in high overall efficiency over extended bandwidths have been considered in this study effort. Some of the techniques have been pursued during previous efficiency studies in which high efficiencies have been demonstrated on low duty pulsed traveling-wave tubes. The present study is complicated by both the hight average power requirement and the dual mode capacity to be afforded by the resulting experimental tube. Experimental cold testing dealing with helices of different pitch has been performed. Suitable shaping methods have resulted in high interaction impedances with small phase velocity variations over octave bandwidths. Large signal computer evaluations considering beam-circuit wave velocity resynchronization schemes have been conducted. In particular various velocity taper geometries have been studied. A dual mode electron gun has been designed and evaluated. Favorable beam characteristics have been demonstrated at different perveances levels, corresponding to both the high power pulsed and low power continuous wave modes of operation. A satisfactory match has been demonstrated for both the input and output transducers. In addition, considerable effort has been expended on constructional and assembly techniques.
