Abstract : This special project report investigates the desirability and feasibility of increasing the use of ADP and quantitative techniques in USAWC Course 1, The United States and the International Environment. Based upon the planned and actual content of the USAWC AY72 ADPIR elective and the state of the art in the field of ADP and quantitative techniques as they apply to the social sciences, the areas of statistical techniques, data files, international relations theory and simulation and gaming were researched for applications to USAWC Course 1. It was concluded that the AY73 USAWC Course 1 should include one lesson on international relations theory and one lesson, which would include the play of a game, on simulation and gaming. Appendixes I and II of the report are the recommended lesson plans and inserts to the AY72 USAWC Course 1 Directive for these two lessons. Appendix III contains the description of a political-economic-military game, AWC/NEXUS, that would be played in conjunction with the recommended lesson on simulation and gaming. (Author)
