Abstract : This study was conducted to develop techniques and requirements for expanding built-in-test (BIT) to the extremities of the SOlid STate Electric Logic (SOSTEL) System to include signal sources and power controllers. An approach was evolved which utilizes the data handling portion of SOSTEL to provide the complete BIT capability. The SOSTEL system divides the aircraft electrical power distribution system into three basic segments; i.e., signal sources, data handling, and power switching. The data handling segment has built-in-test to isolate failures to the weapon replaceable assembly (WRA); processor, multiplexer or demultiplexer. Previous evaluations and developments on SOSTEL (system and components) identified the need and desirability of expanding BIT to include all WRA's. A technique developed in this program permits efficient extension of automated testing to the signal sources and power controllers. The technique is called Switched Impedance BITE. Major advantages of this technique are simplicity, significant power reductions, reduced wire (signal) terminations, full time testing and provisions for handling and displaying the BIT data. As a basis for developing the technique, a BIT philosophy was first evolved. The established philosophy set forth the overall requirements and priorities from which implementation techniques were developed. The chosen technique was then breadboarded to establish feasibility and permit refinement of the overall BIT concept.
