Abstract : This report presents the results of a trial program to evaluate a mechanical strain recorder (the Prewitt Scratch Strain Gage, commonly called the Scratch gage) for future fatigue monitoring on individual C-130 aircraft. A C-130E aircraft at Langley AFB was instrumented with eight electrical and four scratch strain gages. Comparisons of stresses from the scratch and electrical gases indicate that the scratch gage, particularly the 10- and 12-inch gages, accurately recorded the ground-air-ground strains. Two locations were selected for future programs--Center Wing Station 58 (upper surface) and Outer Wing Station 90 (upper surface). Transfer functions were derived which relate strains at other critical locations to strains recorded by the scratch gage at selected locations. A scratch gage length of 10 inches was selected for future strain monitoring to provide adquate sensitivity and allow for the recording of several flights before target removal would be necessary.
