Abstract : Special medical surveillance tests for workers exposed to trinitrotoluene (TNT) at Newport Army Ammunition Plant were instituted because of reported worker symptoms and illnesses. Although several improvements in the TNT fill and pack operations were implemented during the course of this study, an analysis of the medical surveillance data revealed significant adverse physiological effects at what had generally been considered safe levels of TNT exposure. Recommendations to more adequately protect the health of workers against TNT throughout the Army include: (1) More frequent medical surveillance of potentially exposed workers, (2) Specific guidance on types of medical surveillance tests to be performed, and (3) Specific guidance for medical monitoring and follow up of workers with abnormal test results.
