Abstract : The synthesis of the first metallocarborane complexes of Group IV and V transition metals is described. The reaction between the metal halides TiCl4, ZrCl4 and VCl3 and C2R2B10H10(2-) (R = H, CH3) has yielded a series of metallocarboranes formulated as (M(C2R2B10H10H10)2)(2-) with M in the formal oxidation state of +2(M = Ti, R = H, CH3; M = Zr, R = CH3; M = V, R = H). For M = Ti and Zr, the diamagnetic 13-vertex metallocarboranes were found to be fluxional in solution, as evidenced by 11B and 1H nmr spectrosocpy. In all cases, the proposed structure is a monomer containing a metal atom symmetrically pi bound to two carborane cages.
