Abstract : Given a real matrix A not necessarily square and a vector b of compatible length, the linear least squares problem seeks the minimum euclidean distance between b and the range of A. Two newly devised algorithms for the numerical solution of the linear least squares problem are described which feature modified Householder transformations. Some numerical experiments are also described.
