Abstract : In the paper the problem of a three dimensional surface flaw is solved by the method of exterior collocation. Representing the shape of such a crack by a sector of a circle, the objective is to construct a set of harmonic functions such that the most stringent boundary conditions are satisfied exactly. These conditions are: the normal displacement is zero outside the crack surface and the normal stress is zero or prescribed inside the crack surface. There are additional boundary conditions due to the symmetry of the problem. Using integral forms of harmonic functions, the above conditions are satisfied and the rest of the boundary conditions exterior to the plane of the crack are then satisfied by collocation in the least square sense.
