Abstract : In the context of the changed political and international security environment in Southeast Asia, the quarter-century Thai-American security link no longer seems viable. As the US reduces its presence in Thailand to levels commensurate with major interests as opposed to vital, it will be important to secure some residual level of US military assistance to Thailand in order for the Thais to maintain what capabilities they have to combat domestic insurgency and act independently in foreign policy.
