Abstract : The sidelobe properties of a spherical conformal array are considered in detail. The outer sidelobe behavior of the array, governed by the grating lobes generated due to the array symmetry, is shown to be very sensitive to aperture illumination, and increases considerably as one tapers the aperture illumination for low near-in sidelobes. The grating lobes appear in the pecular manner due to the symmetries inherent in the icosahedron geometry, and the rotational symmetry of the array results in a multiplication of the number of grating lobe planes occurring for the conventional planar array. The effects of random errors in the element positioning have also been included.
