Abstract : The structure and solid state properties of manganese dioxides are of interest because of the use of this oxide as a depolarizer in a variety of battery systems. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) has been used to study a series of molybdenum oxide doped manganese dioxides. The ESR results show that both the surface area of the manganese dioxide as well as the Mn(2+) concentration in the material depends on the amount of molybdenum oxide added. Determination of these quantities is of interest since the work of Valand indicates that they are related to the electrochemical characteristics of the manganese dioxides.
