Abstract : Accounting and finance supervisors rated journeyman-level tasks on the importance of a supervisor knowing how to perform those tasks for being a satisfactory supervisor. There were 254 desirable journeyman-level tasks identified in the study. Job analyses of career work experiences for 1,261 accounting and finance supervisors indicated that many supervisors had limited career experience in the desirable journeyman-level tasks. Further, many of the supervisors had spent most of their career time within very few of eight accounting and finance work areas. This study indicates the present accounting and finance work management unit may be too broad for the required work activities. Interviews with accounting and finance personnel supported the findings of this study with regard to the problem of supervisory work experience. Separation of the Accounting (671X1) and Disbursement (671X3) career ladders through the 7-skill level appeared preferable.
