Abstract : In recent years, there have been important advances in understanding of the structure and functions of natural membranes. This report summarizes and assesses the general state of research on the subject with the emphasis on developments in Europe. The author's perspective, which was formed during the past year as a result of visiting labs and talking to scientists, includes a recognition of the role of various paradigms in membrane research, and a change in the conception of molecular movements in membranes as a result of the introduction of 'fluidity' measurements. The report summarizes these ideas and provides a general overview of recent specific research developments in Europe.
