Abstract : Theoretical research carried out under AFOSR contract no. F44620-73-C-0003 during the period August 1, 1974 to July 31, 1975, is described in this interim report. Nonlinear effects associated with an intense laser beam incident upon a dense hot plasma have been studied. During the past year a large part of the research has been devoted to radiation-excited localized plasma fields, or solitons, with particular emphasis on effects of background magnetic fields and thermal fluctuations. Such solitons are believed to play an important role in plasma heating. In addition, further general work on parametric instabilities and multiphoton effects was conducted. An experiment is now in progress and preliminary results indicate direct measurement of parametrically unstable Langmuir waves in a high density plasma may have been achieved.
