Abstract : High strength optical fibers communication system construction. This report summarizes an effort to increase fiber strength by coating (sizing) with polymers which reduce surface damage. The polyethylene coating investigated increased the strength of fused silica fibers from 143 MN/sq to 3440 MN/sq for short gage lengths. (Author)
