Abstract : This report describes the mathematical techniques used as the basis for developing a set of related computer programs that collectively represent an automated procedure for airfield site evaluation. A model that numerically delineates the topography of a selected site and a model for the layout of an airfield are analytically examined for compatibility. If the airfield and site geometries are determined to be compatible, construction time and cost estimates can be generated for vegetaion clearing, topsoil stripping, excavation at a cut location and haulage of soil from the cut to a fill lcation, spreading of fill, soil compaction, and placement of a runway surface. The runway surfaces included in the inventory of the evaluation procedure are unsurfaced with or without membrane, light-duty mat with or without membrane, medium-duty mat with or without membrane, flexible pavement, and rigid pavement.
