Abstract : Fatigue tests have been performed on notched specimens of three precipitation hardened aluminium alloys under constant amplitude loading. The fatigue characteristics have been obtained over a range of mean stress values which includes tensile and compressive levels, comparisons being made between the three alloys and between the two notch factors used in the tests. Correlation is obtained between alternating stress and the numbers of fatigue nuclei and evidence of two types of fatigue failure at certain stress levels is identified. A useful method of presenting data at different mean stress values is introduced and further work on it suggested.
