Abstract : Design theory is presented for constructing an underwater acoustic transducer (piezoelectric) having a frequency-independent directivity index. The transmitting current response is shown to be constant above a low-frequency limit. Bandwidths of several decades can be achieved for application to surveillance tracking, communication, bottom mapping, mine detection, or target identification. Theoretical design data are presented graphically.
