Abstract : A finite element method is given to solve the quasigeostrophic equations in an open-sided domain. The complicating features of the problem are the non-linearity of the equations and the time dependence of the boundary conditions. The problem is first posed in full generality, and its difficulties are discussed. Simplifications are then considered which restrict the physical model to gain computational efficiency. The end result of this reduction process is a model which is computationally feasible, but still physically meaningful. (Author)
