Abstract : Calculations of runup due to seismic sea waves (tsunamis) of distant origin were made for Monterey and San Francisco Bays and the greater part of Puget Sound. Those areas which are specifically included and excluded are listed. The values presented are interpreted as being equaled or exceeded on the average of once per 100 (R100) or one per 500 (R500) yr, whichever is indicated. All runup values, R100 and R500, are referenced to the mean sea level datum. The combined effects of astronomical tides and tsunamis are incorporated into the analysis as are certain local effects. The effects of wind waves superimposed on the tsunami have been neglected. The simultaneous occurrence of a storm surge and tsunami is considered highly improbable and therefore unlikely to constitute a l in 100- or 1 in 500- yr. event.
